Aiken County Career and Technology Center to host open house

Oct. 29—Do you know anything about the Aiken County Career and Technology Center?

Well, now is your chance to learn because ACCTC is holding a community night for parents and students to come learn more about the 17 programs offered, said principal Kenneth Lott.

"The community night is an opportunity for the community to come in and see all the fascinating work we're doing at the career center to promote career and tech education ... Everybody can benefit from attending; all students can benefit from the career center. If you're going to college, the military or workforce, we have programs that benefit every child," Lott said.

During the event attendees will be able to tour the campus and visit the different programs while hearing from teachers and students currently enrolled there, Lott said. He added that parents and students, especially those in middle school and just starting high school, are encouraged to attend.

"We just want to encourage the community to come out and see the opportunities that exist within the Aiken County Public School District," Lott said. "Also ACPSD is in the process of building a new state of the art career and technology center on the Aiken Tech campus and this will create more opportunities for students to receive skills."

The center offers three year, two year, and one year programs to students. The three-year programs include cosmetology, health science, and welding and must be applied for when the student is in ninth grade. Also, with three-year options are emergency and fire management and criminal justice/law enforcement programs that can be applied for in the ninth grade.

As for the two-year programs offered, those include fashion design and apparel construction, digital art and design, automotive technology, diesel technology, electricity, machine technology, mechatronics, sports medicine, and biomedical science, which can be applied for in 10th grade.

The programs mechanical and architectural design (MADD) and cyber security and networking are two-year programs that offered through dual-enrollment at Aiken Tech.

The emergency and fire management and criminal justice/law enforcement programs are offered as a three-year and two-year program.

The one-year programs include nail technology, introduction to barbering, and braiding exploratory that can be applied for in the 10th grade or 11th grade.

"Everybody can benefit from a plumber, everybody can benefit from an electrician ... we need all those skills," Lott said.
