MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC's and NEC'sdefense system revealed by cyberattack "Karate-fist"

Attack on private companies
Large-scale cyber attacks against major Japanese companies such as Mitsubishi Electric ,NEC and so on have come to light.

At Mitsubishi Electric, not only its own information and personal information for 8,000 people, but also information from dozens of business partners of government and private companies are illegally accessed. Information on sensitive defense-related and social infrastructure such as electricity and railways may have been leaked.

The culprit is the Chinese-based cyber attack group "Tick", and is believed to have accessed more than 120 personal computers and more than 40 servers at Mitsubishi Electric's headquarters from a system of Mitsubishi Electric's Chinese subsidiary. NEC was also attacked by a cyber attack, revealing that 27,000 files had been accessed illegally.

Mitsubishi Electric and NEC are both companies that support government and private cyber defense, so to speak, are "guard companies" in the cyber field, and are also leading companies in the defense industry with strict security controls. But Japan's cyber defense regime has "lethal flaws."

The invasion of Japan's cyber defense industry has shocked stakeholders, but it's actually the tip of the iceberg.

Assuming that a foreign government was involved in cyberattacking Japan, attacks on MHI in 2011, infiltration of the lower house computer system, leakage of 1.25 million personal information from the Japan Pension Service in 2015, 2016 It has been revealed that JTB has leaked information on 6.79 million customers, as well as long-term attacks on private companies and academic institutions by Chinese cyber attack group APT10.

Moreover, the objects and methods are diversifying year by year. Diversified attack targets and means Until factory shutdown, power outage, and election disruption

At the beginning of the cyber attack, there were many “pleasant criminals”. It spreads viruses to an unspecified number of computers.

Later, "Cyber Spy" was born. Traditionally, industrial espionage, military espionage, and diplomatic espionage used to steal confidential information from humans.

With the development of the Internet, government-affiliated cyber attackers began to use computers around 2007 to spy on. This Mitsubishi Electric case is an example of this.

Recently, there has been physical destruction of facilities and infrastructure due to "cyber terrorism." Cyberattacks can disrupt civilian lives by to explode nuclear power plants and chemical plants that use computer-controlled systems,to shut down power and water supplies.

In fact, the following cases of cyber attacks have been reported. Turkish pipeline blasted in 2008 (possibly involving Russia), Iran's nuclear development facility neutralized in 2010 (possibly involving Israel and the US), German steelworks in 2014 Plant has been shut down.

There were major blackouts in Ukraine in 2015 and 2016 (possibly involving Russia). The “globalization” of cyber attacks is also progressing.

In 2017, major cyberattacks in hospitals around the UK disrupted medical services, such as surgery, and caused many damages, including the shutdown of Nissan Motor's UK plant.

At this time, Honda's Sayama plant was shut down in Japan, and damage was confirmed in 150 countries including Russia, France, the United Kingdom and the United States.

It is said that North Korea has made billions of dollars of foreign currency by bringing down computers in other countries with viruses to gain foreign currency and transferring virtual currency to recover the computer.

The world was surprised by a new trick that demanded a ransom with the computer as a "hostage". In recent years, there has been a frequent occurrence of “election intervention” in which candidates who are advantageous to their country are elected.

Since the campaign has started using SNS such as Twitter and Facebook, fake news is sent out at the time of election of the partner country, and confidential information that disadvantageous candidates are troubled for their country is intentionally released. Therefore, they are increasingly intervening in foreign elections.

Russia was allegedly attacking the Democratic National Committee in the US during the 2016 US presidential election to disadvantage Democratic candidates.

In 2017, during the French presidential election, Macron's candidate camp had a massive cyberattack, which caused a large amount of e-mail and accounting document information to leak onto the Internet,

and during the Taiwan presidential election in January this year, it has been reported that Chinese groups have spread fake news, such as "No PhD", regarding President Tsai, who claims to be independent of Taiwan.
