HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Every year, new technology is released. Hastings Police Department is doing the best they can to keep up with the trends and use it to their advantage to do their jobs more efficiently.
The upgrades include staying up to date with body cameras, police cruiser and crime scene equipment, and more.
HPD Captain Mike Doremus told Local4 News technological advancement has come in handy with several different areas of their department, ranging from how a phone call is received, to how an officer investigates a call for service or a crime.
Itâs not just the upgrades theyâve made within their department thatâs helping law enforcement everyday while on shift.
âWhen it comes back to like cell phones on the scene prior to an officer arriving, somebody thatâs witnessing a crime can snap pictures or snap a video of whatâs taken place before police arrive on scene â And thatâs something that we use a lot for our investigation,â said Doremus. âWhether itâs a cellphone, or itâs a doorbell, or just a camera on a business or a home.â
Doremus said they try to keep up with the latest technology as best they can and, because of it, officers have been able to have quicker response times.
âThereâs always new and improved things,â he noted. âSometimes thereâs a budgetary impact so, we might not have everything that there is available but we do very well as an agency to have those many tools available to us.â
Currently, HPD is working to upgrade to a Next Generation 911 system. This would allow their dispatch to receive both photos and videos through a text message.
