A business document detailing seven areas sheep farmers can tackle to ready their business for the future has included mental health among its core principles.

The National Sheep Association (NSA) launched the Business Readiness Toolkit on Thursday (31 October) to ensure farmers are prepared for the changes ahead.

Seven areas sheep farmers can tackle

The toolkit has farmer case studies for each topic, as well as podcasts from experts.

  1. Getting the right mindset
  2. Ensuring good mental health
  3. Checking business health
  4. Developing resilient systems
  5. Planning for the future
  6. Identifying other income streams
  7. Looking ahead to future support schemes

All NSA members have received a printed copy to every member, but non-members can access an online version or contact the NSA head office for a printed version.

NSA chief executive Phil Stocker said the Association had long been away that Brexit would mean “significant change” to trade patterns and markets, as well as future subsidy support.

Mr Stocker said: “Our government and devolved administrations have an ambitious vision for British farming enterprises to become more profitable and productive, to further improve environmental conditions in their widest sense, and to continue to raise our standards of production – particularly in the areas of the environment and animal welfare.

“This ambition is generally shared by all our main political parties and is unlikely to be affected by any future changes in government.”
