2021 World Wide Technology Championship odds: PGA picks, Mayakoba predictions from model that called 7 majors

After many of the PGA's top golfers took the last few weeks off, they will be back in action this Thursday for the 2021 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka will play their first event in three weeks as they are two of 11 Ryder Cup players in the field. They will play at a course tailor-made for shooting low scores as El Camaleon Golf Club in Mexico has seen the last three winners of this tournament break 20-under par. One of those winners was Viktor Hovland, who claimed this event last year and will be looking to win the $1.3 million winner's share again this time around.

Thomas finished in 12th place at last year's tournament but is the 14-1 favorite in the latest 2021 World Wide Technology Championship odds. Those come courtesy of Caesars Sportsbook, which has Hovland at 18-1, Abraham Ancer at 22-1 and Koepka a long shot at 30-1. A dozen major champions are part of the 2021 World Wide Technology Championship field, so the event should be competitive to the very end. The model's top 2021 World Wide Technology Championship predictions 

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2021 World Wide Technology Championship: Justin Thomas, a 14-time PGA Tour champion and the odds-on favorite, stumbles this week and doesn't even crack the top three. Thomas had a disappointing finish compared to his lofty standards in his only start of the 2021-22 season, finishing T-18 at the CJ Cup. A final round 64 propelled Thomas to a top-20 finish in that event. 

The 28-year-old is often among the best putters on the PGA Tour, but he's been extremely inconsistent with the flat stick early this season. In fact, Thomas enters the 2021 World Wide Technology Championship ranked 207th in total putting (316.3) and 197th in strokes gained: putting (-.743). Thomas also ranks 62nd in greens in regulation percentage (72.22) and 91st in scoring average (71.068). He's not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values in the World Wide Technology Championship 2021 field.

Another surprise: Scottie Scheffler, a 30-1 long shot, makes a strong run at the title. Scheffler shot 11-under par at this tournament two years ago to finish in 18th place. But he's improved in all areas of his game since then, so he has a much better chance at winning than his odds suggest.

Something seemed to click for Scheffler early last year and he went on an incredible run afterwards. He posted eight top-10 finishes over a 16-tournament stretch that included two majors and two World Golf Championships. Thus, he's used to competing against stacked fields, which should serve him well in Mexico.

Through two tournaments this season, the Texas alum is among the best on the PGA Tour at breaking par. His 5.83 birdie average ranks sixth on the PGA Tour and he also has high marks in strokes gained: putting (.807) which ranks 24th. 20-under was the winning score last year so you'll want to place your 2021 World Wide Technology Championship bets on someone like Scheffler who can consistently get birdies. He also shot a 65 in his last competitive round at the CJ Cup three weeks ago so he'll tee off at El Camaleon Golf Club with plenty of momentum.
