The Digital Divide (Part I) Preparing the Addiction Treatment and Recovery Workforce for the Digital Age

iSpeech

Since behavioral health is considered one of the ten essential health care benefits, access to quality substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and recovery services becomes an important issue. Unfortunately, access to these services is hindered due to SUD workforce shortages and transportation issues. The use of telehealth technologies may be one method of decreasing barriers to accessing treatment. However, successful navigation of the issues and challenges associated with providing access to affordable care requires that organizations be aware of and utilize the resources available to them. This presentation provides an overview of telehealth technologies with an emphasis on how these technologies can enhance the quality of treatment services and increase access. Specifically, participants will learn about how people approach the use of technology and the Internet (digital immigrants vs. digital natives); privacy and security issues; and ethics associated with providing treatment/recovery services using telehealth technologies.

Objectives:
• Understand the latest approaches using telehealth technologies to enhance delivery of services.
• Explore strategies utilizing telehealth technologies to increase access to care for clients.
• Approaches to engage clinical staff to be comfortable utilizing telehealth in practice.
• Understand the impact of telehealth technologies on ethical practices.
