Israeli computer security expert Keren Elazari wants people to realise that they should protect their mobile devices just as thoroughly as they protect their PCs -- so, at Wired 2012, she decided to hack some phones.
"When we are using unknown networks, when we are downloading applications, basically we are playing the wheel of fortune -- you either win, or you lose your data to some bad guys," she says. As a case in point, at the start of the day she set up a fake wireless network ("Wired 2012 Demo") and invites attendees to connect their devices -- "if you dare". A few do dare, and are treated to a demonstration of the importance of mobile security.
"We really are in an era with data all around us, we're collecting it, analysing it," says Elazari. "Information is power, we're told, but without access to that information, we're powerless. Where is your data? Where is it being transmitted? Are you in control of your data?"
