All while learning the trade,  Schuylkill County Technology Center students get to show off their creativity as well.

STC Students, Anthony Gaughan and Noah Morgan, both enrolled in the Computer Information Systems Program at the South Campus of showcased their “Pizza Box Computer” during the STC Open House Event held on September 21, 2022.

“Anthony and Noah utilized old computer components to a fully functioning computer inside a used pizza box,” said CIS Instructor Lisa Worthy. This is just one of the interesting items on display during the bi-annual STC Open House event held on September 21, 2022, at STC North and South Campuses.

The Open House Events are an opportunity for prospective students, current students, parents, industry partners and post-secondary college partners to come together to experience all that career and technical education has to offer. The theme for this year’s event was “21st Century Career and Technical Training,” to highlight the fact that the STC of today is very different from the “Vo-Tech of your grandparents’ era” said Director Shannon Brennan. Six hundred and sixty-nine visitors attended the Open House.

In addition to the Pizza Box Computer, visitors tasted the food prepared by culinary students, witnessed the new PLC trainer in the Electro-Mechanical Technology Program, the digital Anatomage Table used in the Emerging Health Program, the HAAS CNC in the Precision Machining program and the Plasma Cutter in the Welding program; all items purchased through technical equipment grant programs facilitated by the Bureau of Career and Technical Education.

Industry partners also participated in this bi-annual event to demonstrate their support of career and technical education. “They are on-site to talk to parents and prospective students about the long-term career opportunities that exist for STC grads,” said Director, Shannon Brennan. Representatives from the BAC Local (Masonry Union), Auto Zone, Sands Ford, Hexcel, St. Luke’s Geisinger Hospital and Bowers Home Carpenter, just to name a few.

The spring Open House is scheduled for March 1, 2023.
