Program to raise University’s awareness about cybersecurity
In addition to deploying technology and process to combat the epidemic of phishing, ransomware and other cyber-attacks which seem to grow more prevalent by the day, ITaP is significantly enhancing the Cyber Security Awareness Program, an initiative that aims to teach and train faculty, staff, and students about ongoing cybersecurity threats that impact the University and their lives.
Nolyn Johnson, with more than 17 years' experience in cybersecurity teaching and operations, says the Cybersecurity Awareness Program’s mission is to educate the University about ongoing threats and how to avoid them. He is looking to partner with faculty, departments, student organizations and others across all Purdue campuses to find ways to spread the cybersecurity awareness message.
“There is a critical need for real awareness about the cyber threats you face online,” says Johnson. “Social media and email attacks are constantly changing and becoming more sophisticated. One wrong click and your identity can be stolen, your data can be held for ransom, or the University’s network can be impacted. The reality is that the threats have never been greater, to you individually and to the entire University.”
The CyberSecurity Awareness program aims to teach and train faculty, staff, and students about ongoing cybersecurity threats by hosting events, conducting training and engaging the community to raise awareness about the need for cybersecurity.
This fall, the Cybersecurity Awareness Program has been hosting information tables at various student orientation and welcome programs across campuses, but Johnson says there will be a slate of events scheduled for October’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month. There are also employment opportunities for students interested in cyber security awareness and Johnson says he is looking to partner with groups seeking materials and training opportunities, as well as other avenues to get the cybersecurity message out across campus.
“This program aims to be a resource for anyone with cyber security questions, or those needing more information or who want to raise awareness among their staff or students,” Johnson says.
