For context, over a 15-year period the local hospital would on average replace or purchase approximately $200 million in medical equipment.

β€œThis agreement allows Windsor Regional Hospital to provide health services supported by leading edge medical equipment and technology to the residents of Windsor-Essex and all we serve,” said Malissa Gauthier, the hospital’s chief financial officer and corporate vice-president.

β€œWe are excited to be collaborating with GE HealthCare to support outstanding care for our patients in a way that is financially sustainable β€” both now and as we plan for the new hospital.”

Under the agreement, GE HealthCare will take over full responsibility for acquisition, installation, maintenance and staff training for the majority of the medical technology utilized at the hospital, including diagnostic imaging, surgical, cardiology and emergency department equipment.

Windsor Regional adopted the service based on the success of GE HealthCare’s collaboration with Humber River Hospital in Toronto which is now in its eighth year.

The savings to the Windsor’s hospital are expected to be in the millions each year. Humber River has reported the agreement has ended up saving them $80 million so far.

The agreement will continue to be in place as Windsor Regional Hospital transitions technology and services to the new Windsor-Essex acute care hospital.

In addition to new diagnostic equipment β€” along with replacements as technology evolves β€” patients and staff will see increased accuracy and speed with diagnostic imaging and improved diagnosis.

There is expected to be shorter downtime of equipment with fewer procedure cancellations. Specialized training will also be in place for staff, keeping then up to date as technology evolves and new equipment is introduced.

GE HealthCare will have on-site service support, reducing any downtime with quicker equipment repairs or replacement. There are planned to be four GE HealthCare staff on site.

The agreement also provides a predictable hospital budget cost for the technology and equipment services.

β€œGE HealthCare is here to serve the Windsor Regional community, predictably providing new and innovative technology to support their health-care teams over the long-term,” said Mike Hamilton, CEO of GE HealthCare Canada.

β€œAs health care continues to evolve, our collaboration will help support clinicians and staff to deliver precision health care with improved workflows and reduced stress, allowing them to spend more time focused on their patients.”
