Laredo College was recipient of a six-figure grant that will bring numerous benefits including implementing new workshops, increasing students’ initiative and featuring a giveaway of 170 laptops.

The economic support called Accelerating Student Success Grant was funded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Program, as given for the quantity of 300,000 to Laredo College for its recently-restructured Learning Enrichment Center, renamed the Center for Learning, Academic and Student Success, or CLASS.

CLASS offers a new innovative way of learning, delivering student support services and increasing retention rates from term to term. It also reflects the “College of the 21st Century” goal of the Laredo College Strategic Plan and aligns with the college’s mission of being a learner-centered institution that transforms students’ lives through educational programs and services.

The application for the grant was filed by Dean of Academic Innovation & Technology Division Dr. Elizabeth Rodriguez and Associate Vice President of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness Dr. Veronica Martinez.

“We are just humbled by being selected by THECB to receive this money,” Rodriguez said. “This money will go a long way in ensuring that our students get the support they need to successfully complete their journey at Laredo College. As always, our goal is to help our students get to the finish line and graduate.”

Some of the new workshops to be developed by CLASS thanks to this fund will include “Tips for Successful Test Taking,” “Stay Motivated,” “Microsoft Word, Excel, iMovie,” and many more.

Rodriguez added that the funds will allow CLASS to buy collaborative tables, clear touch screens, hire peer mentors and buy laptops in the efforts to support and ensure student success.

These technologies will create working spaces in CLASS, where students can collaborate with faculty, staff and peers.

As about 170 laptops are being purchased, all registered students who are eligible will have the chance to be able to have this device use.

Students must meet the following criteria: be enrolled for the semester, be in good academic standing, receive tutoring services, engage in academic coaching with faculty and participate in CLASS workshops. Students who meet all the requirements will be entered into a drawing to win a laptop.

All registered eligible students can also receive the services offered by CLASS, including academic coaching from faculty, workshops, peer-to-peer tutoring and peer mentoring.

“We are thrilled to have been awarded these funds. This money will go a long way to help our students succeed,” Rodriguez said.
