Vein visualisation mechanism enables surgeons to see and easily figure out the veins in a patient’s body with unprecedented clarity

New Delhi: The path-breaking vein visualisation technology, also known as vein mapping, has been one of the most important devices in a vascular surgeon’s toolbox.

Correct identification of veins for injection sometimes can be a difficult task for drug-delivery physicians, especially in the cases of obese, elderly, dark-skin-toned patients. If an injection is wrongly placed, it causes severe pain and leads to swelling.

Thus, this mechanism enables surgeons to see and easily figure out the veins in a patient’s body with unprecedented clarity, leading to more accurate and comfortable procedures.

How does vein visualisation work?

The technology, according to Accuvein.com, uses Near-infrared (NIR) imaging for detecting veins under the skin by employing two safe barcode-scanner class lasers - an invisible and a visible red.

The two lasers provide a real-time image of the subcutaneous vasculature up to 10 mm (about 0.39 in) deep.

Experts say that hemoglobin absorbs infrared light thereafter changing the reflection to determine vein location and pattern, which it digitally projects on the surface of the skin.

Also, a green laser light makes the vein mapping easily visible for procedures.

According to studies, independent studies have shown that vein detection devices can improve first stick success by 98 percent.

What are the problems in administering IV injections?

  • Infiltration: It is the infusion of fluid or medicine outside the intravascular space, into the surrounding soft tissue. Usually, it is caused by poor placement of a needle outside of the vessel lumen. It causes swelling of the tissue making the skin feel pale and cool.
  • Hematoma: This occurs when there is leakage of blood from the vessel into the surrounding soft tissue.
  • Air Embolism: Air embolism occurs when a large volume of air enters the patient's vein through the IV set. Health experts say small children are at greater risk of air embolisms, which can be prevented by making sure that all the air bubbles are out of the tubing.

How does vein mapping benefit?

Some of the advantages and benefits of vein mapping technology, according to doctors include:

The technology gives a clear and unimpeded view of the veins, allowing the doctors to see exactly where they need to insert the needle.

  1. It is less invasive than other methods like x-rays.
  2. There is a lesser risk of infections that can lead to serious diseases and ailments like HIV and Hepatitis C and A.
  3. It helps to locate and assess patent veins while avoiding valves and bifurcations
  4. The procedure is very quick and easy hence it does not need the patient to wait longer.
  5. Vein visualization technology is an affordable option for many patients.
  6. The technology also helps reduce anxiety in patients scared of needles
