Genova Burns, one of New Jersey’s most politically influential law firms, announced this morning that current partner Harris Freier will lead the firm’s privacy and cybersecurity practice.

“Privacy & cybersecurity are quickly becoming crucial issues and potential liabilities for many of our clients, and Harris has the acumen, temperament, and expertise necessary to service our clients in this growing area,” Genova Burns chairman Angelo Genova said in a statement.

According to the release, the practice will focus on guiding businesses through the “data life cycle” of acquiring, protecting, and deleting personal data on employees and customers. Joining Freier in the practice will be Bill Megna, Rebecca Moll Freed, Charles Messina, and Raj Parikh.

The issue of cybersecurity is one that has lately drawn increased focus in both the legal and political world. Also today, Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) announced that New Jersey will get $3.3 million from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to strengthen online infrastructure and protect against potential future cyberattacks.

“Ransomware and cyberattacks increasingly threaten the critical services our municipal and county governments and school districts provide, yet many local governments are ill-equipped to protect themselves,” Malinowski said in a statement. “This grant is great first step toward helping them protect us, and another example of how the infrastructure bill is helping New Jersey.”
