#CyberHeadlines: Cyber Security Skill Gap

TTS

CIO.com recently published an article based on a study from Intel and the Center for Strategic and International Studies where they interviewed 775 IT decision makers, including CISO’s and other cybersecurity experts about the skills shortage in the field. 82% expressed a huge concern about the cybersecurity field. What was their biggest concern? Information Technology undergrads are not learning about cyber security best practices and protocols. Michael Taylor, applications and product development lead at Rook Security, mentors college interns from cybersecurity programs and says that these programs lack hands-on experience for students. Taylor says that this lack of experience doesn’t allow students to “immediately contribute solid code to a team after graduation” adding that “What they are missing is the focus on how to make their programs durable, fault tolerant and secure". Taylor claims that having secure program from the development stage helps reduce data breaches and costs when resolving these issues in the production stage.

So, what are the remedies to this lack of cyber security knowledge in our IT educations? Supplemental learning, awareness training and getting students interested to create more demand. If students show an interest in cyber security schools will begin to meet that demand. Until then, companies need to look within themselves to invest in training initiatives and supplemental training to help their internal team meet the needs of the business.
