CommonSpirit Health, one of the nation’s largest health systems, said it experienced an “IT security incident” on Monday at an undisclosed number of facilities in multiple regions.

“This is impacting multiple CommonSpirit divisions,” spokesperson Chad Burns told Healthcare Dive in an emailed statement. CommonSpirit operates 140 hospitals and more than 1,500 sites of care across 21 states.

Burns declined to provide more details on the security incident.

Some of CommonSpirit’s facilities in Chattanooga, Tennessee, moved certain systems offline including electronic health records, according to a statement from CHI Memorial, which operates two hospitals in the Chattanooga area.

Some patient procedures were rescheduled due to the incident, CHI Memorial said in the statement.

“We take our responsibility to ensure the privacy of our patients and IT security very seriously,” it said.

The facilities are following protocols for system outages and are “taking steps to minimize the disruption,” CHI added.

CommonSpirit generated revenue of $34 billion in fiscal year 2022, according to the nonprofit system’s audited financial report

CommonSpirit was formed out of the 2019 merger of Catholic Health Initiatives and Dignity Health.

This is a developing story and will be updated as Healthcare Dive learns more.
